Endurance Academy

MAX Sports Medicine's Endurance Academy integrates education, training and cutting-edge research to provide athletes with a scientifically based, individualized training program.

Each program incorporates endurance, speed, strength and flexibility to enhance athletic performance.

The Runner’s Clinic

The Runner’s Clinic is a performance center created by runners for runners. The Clinic provides a comprehensive assessment to maximize your running performance. The assessment includes a medical evaluation by Dr. Darrin Bright, Dartfish video gait analysis, biomechanical assessment with a licensed physical therapist or athletic trainer, force plate assessment of foot mechanics, professional shoe fitting, and individual nutrition consultation with a registered sports dietitian. To provide this evaluation we bring together a group of professionals who specialize in treating endurance athletes.

Endurance Academy Services include the following:

Enhancing Your Performance

The Runner's Clinic offers an extensive review of technique, training, conditioning, nutrition and other factors that influence distance running. It uses the latest technology to probe every aspect of a runner's stride, from the pressure points on the feet to flexion in the knees. Our clinical professionals are all runners and specialize in treating endurance athletes.

VO2 MAX Testing

VO2 MAX is the point where your body cannot increase its intake of oxygen despite an increase in exercise intensity. The VO2 MAX test enables an athlete to establish his/her true maximal heart rate and ventilatory threshold that will assist in developing an appropriate endurance training program. This test is very predictive of an athlete's potential as an endurance athlete with participation in a structured training program.

Anaerobic Threshold Testing

Endurance athletes, including runners, swimmers, cyclists and triathletes, all need to train as fast as possible without "hitting the wall." This sensation results from an accumulation of high levels of lactic acid in the bloodstream. The anaerobic threshold can be measured using the ventilatory threshold taken during the VO2 MAX test. The anaerobic threshold is the best predictor of current endurance performance.

Resting Metabolic Rate

The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) measures the amount of energy used at rest. The RMR can be used to identify your caloric intake needs. At the conclusion of the test, the athlete will receive a comprehensive report that includes a clear explanation of the results.

Lactate Threshold Testing

Lactate Threshold Testing is designed for elite level endurance athletes who demand the most precise measure of their anaerobic threshold. The Lactate Threshold is defined as the highest exercise intensity at which blood lactate concentration does not increase beyond baseline levels.

The Lactate Threshold test involves a graded exercise test on a treadmill or bike resistance trainer. At various stages of the test, we measure lactate levels to determine when lactic acid starts to accumulate. The test takes approximately 45-60 minutes.

Endurance Athlete Assessment

Our physical therapists and athletic trainers work with athletes as they undergo a flexibility and strength assessment. The goal of the assessment is to identify any weak links or muscular imbalances that may lead to injury or compromise performance.

Individualized Endurance Training Consultation

After completing the VO2 MAX and anaerobic threshold testing, we will consult with you to help you understand your comprehensive report that includes a clear explanation of results and training program recommendations.
